Embracing the Gift of Sensitivity: Highly Sensitive Person Survival Guide (HSPs)

Spread the love

Welcome to your survival guide for highly sensitive people. You may have heard the term “HSP” but wondered what it truly means to be a Highly Sensitive Person. HSPs, comprising about 15% to 20% of the population, possess a unique trait known as Sensory Processing Sensitivity. Being an HSP means experiencing life on a profound level, from sights to sounds to emotions. Want to learn more? Let’s dive right in.

For many, the term “highly sensitive” can carry a negative connotation, often labeled as “too sensitive.” However, it’s important to understand that being an HSP is not a disorder or a condition; it’s a unique personality trait. Highly sensitive people process the world differently, and this distinction comes with both challenges and strengths.

For years, I knew I was different, sensitive in a way that left me feeling like an outsider. I attempted to conceal this part of myself, but it only left me feeling exhausted and frustrated. My perspective shifted on my spiritual and healing journey, which began years ago. It was during this time that I discovered how to harness my sensitivity and use it to my advantage.

I found that my sensitivity was a gift, allowing me to read people, work with energies, perform energy healing, and easily step into channeling messages from the universe. It’s through this sensitivity and my connection with the source that I’ve been able to unlock my true potential.

This post is a survival guide for highly sensitive persons.

The Best Survival Guide For Highly Sensitive Persons

What It Means to Be a Highly Sensitive Person: Do you identify with any of the following characteristics?

  • Avoiding violent or horror movies and TV shows because they evoke intense stress and overwhelm.
  • Finding beauty in small things others might overlook, like a starry evening sky that moves you to tears.
  • Feeling overwhelmed by large crowds, strong smells, loud noises, bright lights, or uncomfortable clothing.
  • Craving alone time, especially after busy days or extended social interaction, to recharge in a tranquil space.
  • Delving into deep thoughts, always seeking meaning and purpose in everything.
  • Overthinking situations for days or even weeks, dwelling on what you could or should have said.

Common Triggers for HSPs:

  • Sensing negative energies upon entering a room, absorbing both good and bad vibes.
  • Picking up on the needs and emotions of others, often leading to people-pleasing and difficulty saying no.
  • Struggling to recover from hurtful comments or negative tones directed at you or your loved ones.
  • Becoming overwhelmed with multitasking and excessive responsibilities.
  • Suffering from a lack of sleep, which can be especially detrimental for HSPs who require at least 8 to 10 hours of quality sleep.
  • Ruminating on small matters and taking comments and jokes personally in a negative light.
  • Feeling anxious in crowded places or when being the center of attention (often, HSPs are introverts, with only 30% being extroverts).

Embrace Your Highly Sensitive Awesomeness

Don’t mistake your highly sensitive nature for a weakness or low self-esteem issue. In reality, it’s a unique gift that sets you apart. Are you fortunate to be a highly sensitive person, or do you know someone who is?

You might be thinking that I’m crazy for describing being an HSP as a gift. But it truly becomes a gift once you understand why you experience life as you do. Consider building an emotional protective shield around yourself to guard against negative energy throughout the day. Practices like mindfulness and yoga can be lifesavers for HSPs, helping you listen and observe, and ultimately, let go and let be.

  • Feeling positive emotions deeply, such as joy, gratitude, love, and happiness.
  • Possessing a deep concentration ability when distractions are minimal.
  • Exhibiting high levels of empathy and caring for all living creatures.
  • Embracing life’s highs and lows.
  • Demonstrating incredible creativity.
  • Excelling at reading people, serving as real-life lie detectors.

Coping Strategies and Self-Care for HSPs:

While being an HSP can be empowering, it can also present unique challenges. Here are some coping strategies and self-care practices to help you navigate life as an HSP:

  • Establish Boundaries: Learn to say no when necessary and prioritize self-care.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness meditation and yoga to stay grounded and centered.
  • Limit Exposure to Triggers: Avoid overwhelming environments or situations that trigger anxiety or overstimulation.
  • Embrace Self-Compassion: Practice self-compassion and self-acceptance to counter self-criticism.
  • Journaling: Keep a journal to process your thoughts and emotions and gain clarity on your triggers.
  • Healthy Sleep Habits: Ensure you get adequate and high-quality sleep to recharge your sensitive mind.
  • Engage in Creative Outlets: Express your creativity through art, writing, or other creative activities.
  • Seek Support: Connect with fellow HSPs or consider therapy to explore your sensitivity in a supportive environment.

Connect with Mind, Body, and Soul through Yoga and Meditation:

For Highly Sensitive Persons, finding practices that resonate with your unique nature can be incredibly empowering. This is where Yin Yoga and meditation come into play, offering a profound connection with your inner self.

Within my YouTube channel, you’ll find a collection of practices designed to create a serene and relaxing experience, perfect for highly sensitive individuals. Yin Yoga for HSPs:

Yin Yoga, known for its gentle, restorative nature, is particularly well-suited for HSPs. Here’s why:

  • Deep Relaxation: Yin Yoga allows you to sink into deep relaxation, soothing your sensitive nervous system. The long, passive holds of poses provide a perfect opportunity to let go of physical tension.
  • Emotional Release: As an HSP, you may carry emotions deeply within. Yin Yoga encourages emotional release by creating a safe space for these emotions to surface and be acknowledged.
  • Mindful Awareness: The slow pace of Yin Yoga encourages mindful awareness of physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts. This can help you better understand and manage your sensitivity.
  • Balanced Energy: Yin Yoga balances the body’s energy, ensuring that it flows smoothly. HSPs often feel the impact of imbalanced energy intensely, and Yin Yoga can help restore equilibrium.

Meditation for HSPs:

Meditation, when practiced regularly, complements Yin Yoga and offers unique benefits to HSPs:

  • Calm and Centering: Meditation cultivates a sense of inner calm and centeredness, which is invaluable for HSPs when navigating a world filled with stimuli.
  • Emotional Resilience: Through meditation, you can develop emotional resilience, allowing you to respond to challenging situations with greater composure.
  • Mindful Living: HSPs thrive when living mindfully, and meditation fosters this mindfulness. It encourages you to be present in each moment, fully experiencing it without judgment.
  • Stress Reduction: As an HSP, you may be more prone to stress. Meditation is a powerful tool for reducing stress levels, promoting a sense of peace and tranquility.
  • Enhanced Intuition: Your sensitivity often comes with heightened intuition. Meditation can further enhance this intuitive ability, helping you make decisions aligned with your inner wisdom.

  • Cultivate Awareness: Meditation enhances self-awareness, allowing you to better understand your unique responses and triggers.
  • Strengthen Resilience: Both practices build emotional resilience, helping you navigate life’s ups and downs with grace.
  • Connect with Your Inner Self: Yin Yoga and meditation foster a profound connection with your mind, body, and soul, allowing you to tap into your inner wisdom and intuition.
